April 8: California Chardonnay and French White Burgundy, San Francisco

Another tasting competition was held at the Gibson’s home in San Francisco, and once again a California wine won first place!  For this tasting, we actually tried the wines first without any bread and cheese, and then tasted them again with bread and cheese.  There were some minor differences, possibly attributable to the fact that not as many people voted the 2nd time around.

The winning wine was the 2014 Schafer “Red Shoulder Ranch” Carneros Chardonnay and 2nd place went to the 2014 Henri de Villamont Meursault “Clos de Cromin”, both selling for $50 at K&L.

We used the new Google Docs method of voting for the first time, which made it a lot easier to count and tabulate the results.  The only inconvenience was for those who didn’t have a smart device and needed to borrow someone else’s to complete the ranking.

Another benefit of the Google Docs method is that it’s easy to see everybody’s rankings so you can compare your tastes with others.  Here’s the results for the tasting before food:

Please join us for a double pour of California Chardonnay and French White Burgundy. There will be plenty of room – so please bring guests. The purpose of this event will be not only to enjoy and to distinguish between these two great wine areas but to also, hopefully, select a wine or two for our cellar for later use at a repast.
