July 13: Picnic, Westover Winery, Castro Valley

This year’s Cellar Society picnic was held at the Westover Winery, a place that is special to members Bob & Sandy Simoni since it was the venue for their wedding reception 8 years ago on July 30. The weather was perfect for the outdoor event, with the mixture of shade and dappled sunshine keeping the temperature just right.

There were 23 members and an impressive number of guests (17) in attendance. The meal was provided by Frank’s Texas BBQ and everyone seemed to agree that the food was excellent (especially the ribs) and there was plenty left over for those who wanted to take some home.

Towards the end of the day, winery owner Bill Smyth gave a history of his family’s background in the wine business, dating back to the mid-1800’s. He then poured samples of his ruby and tawny ports for everyone, and offered people the opportunity to bottle their own ruby port for just $12 a bottle, which quite a few people took advantage of.

WHAT:      2019 Club Picnic
WHERE:   Westover Winery, 34329 Palomares Rd, Castro Valley

Please join us for the annual picnic at Westover Winery located in the historic Palomares Canyon in Castro Valley (also the location of Bob and Sandy’s wedding reception 8 years ago!).
The picnic will be from 12 noon to 4 pm.  Upon arrival, guests will be treated to a complimentary glass of Westover’s Champagne (actual sparkling wine).  A delicious catered lunch buffet from Frank’s Texas BBQ will be served with the following menu:
Meats:
Mesquite Smoked Pork Ribs
Southwestern Marinated Chicken
Seasoned Tri Tip served with whiskey pepper steak sauce and BBQ sauce
Assorted hand-made sausages
Sides:
Seasoned fresh corn on the cob
Longhorn Potato Salad
Caesar Salad
Cowboy Beans
Assorted Breads and Rolls
Watermelon Wedges
Please feel free to bring a bottle of your own wine to share as the winery owner, Bill Smyth has given us his blessing to bring outside wine to this event.  Wine from the Westover Winery is also available to purchase in the tasting room and the owner might be able to provide a presentation of the many ports which his winery is known for. Please remember to bring a few wine glasses.
The approximate cost for the picnic will be $55 per person with the final cost to be determined the day of the picnic.  Be sure to invite guests as we need a 40 person minimum to keep the costs down.  No guest fee at the annual picnic.
