March 9: White Rhone, San Francisco

Another fine tasting was held at the Delancey Street Restaurant on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.  This time, we tasted white wines from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region of the Rhone Valley in France, and once again the preferences ranged widely as 6 of the 8 wines had both #1 and #8 votes.  However, the Group’s #1 wine (Bottle 6 – 2017 Chateau de Vaudieu $50) didn’t have any #8 votes, and the group’s #8 wine (Bottle 3 – 2016 Chateau de Monfaucon Clairette $30) didn’t have any #1 votes.

ANNOUNCEMENT

WHAT:     White Wines from the Rhone Valley

WHERE:   Delancey Street Restaurant, Board Room, 600 Embarcadero @ Brannan, San Francisco

WHEN:     Sat. March 9 at 6 P.M.
(Please do not arrive before 5:45, the room will not be ready and there is very little space to wait.)

Most people have not tasted this type of wine; however, if you like unoaked California Chardonnay you will love them!

All the wines will be from France’s Rhone valley and most of them will be in stock at K&L in the $25 to $50 range.  Most likely the wines will be from the appellations of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Saint-Joseph; the former are usually a blend of grapes that can include Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Marsanne, while the latter are usually 100% Marsanne.  The wines are all dry, but they are very fruity and have medium acidity.  The fruit is usually apparent when the wines are young (in deference to French White Burgundy), and even people that normally don’t like French white wines tend to like these.  They are often difficult to find, but K&L has been bringing in more of them recently.

The cost of dinner will be about $60 as long as there are at least 20 diners.  The cost of the tasting will be between $40 and $45 depending on the number of tasters.

Please RSVP, or tell me that you are not able to attend, by replying to this e-mail.  Please tell me if you would like to invite guests (or if your attendance is predicated on your guests being able to attend) and tell me if you (and your guests) would be willing to share a pour if needed (or if you absolutely need a shared pour).

Preferred guests should also RSVP now.

Members have until Friday, February 22 to be guaranteed a spot; however, I hope everyone can contact me before then.

The normal date for admitting guests and preferred guests is Saturday, February 23; however, if all members tell me early if they can attend or not, I hope I can admit the guests and preferred guests before then.
