March 10: Aged Bordeaux, San Francisco

Nearly the entire club attended this wonderful tasting hosted by Steve Smith at the Delancey Street restaurant in South Beach San Francisco.  There were two guests of Indra & Diane in attendance: Mark & Patty.

Once again, the individual member’s tastes for the wines varied greatly, with all the wines getting at least one #1 vote, and all the wines except the 2nd bottle getting at least one #8 vote (and even this bottle got three #7 votes).  All of the wines in the tasting, including the pre-taste wines, showed well.  Some of these wines are true bargains! Many of us thought that all 8 blind tasting wines were good so the ranking was based on stylistic preference.

ANNOUNCEMENT

WHAT:     Aged Bordeaux
WHERE:  Delancey Street Restaurant, Board Room, 600 Embarcadero @ Brannan, San Francisco
WHEN:    Sat. March 10 at 6 P.M.
The wine that wins this tasting will be served at the 2018 Repast.  We will taste an assortment of mature Bordeaux that are drinking well now.  They will all be currently available from local retailers.  Below is a preliminary list of the wines.  They are from vintages from 1999 to 2007 and they are priced from $40 to $70.

2007 l’Arrosee, St-Emilion

2002 Le Cleméntin du Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan

2006 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc

2000 Sarget de Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien

2004 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien

2004 Malescot-St-Exupéry, Margaux

1999 La Gaffeliere, St-Emilion

2005 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien

The 4 pre-wines will also be aged Bordeaux and they will be delicious, but they will be priced below $30.

The cost of dinner will be about $55 as long as there are at least 20 diners.  The cost of the tasting will be between $35 and $45 depending on the number of tasters.

I want to do the same thing that Indra and Diane did with the February tasting and ask a few couples to share a pour if we have more than 22 tasters.  (However, if we have 22 or fewer tasters, shared pours would be discouraged unless necessary so we can keep the per person cost as low as possible.)

The restaurant can seat 40 people for dinner in the private room so there will be plenty of space for guests.

You aren’t required to RSVP until after Saturday, February 10; however, if you are already sure that you will or will not attend, please tell me now.   I will send you a reply back to verify that I received your e-mail.

Please tell me if you would like to invite guests (or if your attendance is predicated on your guests being able to attend) and tell me if you (and your guests) would be willing to share a pour if needed (or if you absolutely need a shared pour).  A few weeks before the tasting I will distribute a menu so you can select your main course.

Preferred guests should also RSVP now.  I am also opening the tasting to guests of our preferred guests especially if they might be possible future members (we do need new members).

Members have until Friday, February 23 to RSVP; however, I hope everyone can contact me before then.

The normal date for admitting guests and preferred guests is Saturday, February 24; however, if members tell me early if they can attend or not, and some couples agree to share a pour, I hope I can admit all guests and preferred guests a week or two before then.

There are 2 parking lots close to the restaurant and there is street parking.
