Another wonderful tasting was held at the home of David & Betty Gibson in San Francisco. Co-hosts were Ed Coyne and Laura Wilson. We had 29 tasters at this double-pour, two of whom were long-time members making their first appearance at a tasting since 2016: Jerry Barrick and Randy Sugarman.
The wines were all excellent, but there was a clear favorite: the 2014 DuMol Pinot Noir – Aiden Wild Rose Vineyard; Green Valley (Sonoma County $89). Although it trailed the #1 wine by 18 points, the group’s #2 wine was a better value: 2014 Mindego Ridge Pinot Noir – Estate Vineyard (Santa Cruz County $45). Wines #3-7 were all pretty close, ranging from 123 to 137 points. The least favorite wine was clearly not popular at 165 points: 2015 Lucia Vineyards Pinot Noir – Garys Vineyard (Santa Lucia Highlands $65). The last two wines received no first place votes, but all wines received at least one #8 vote.
Here’s the complete voting results so you can see how you and everyone else voted:

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
WHAT: California Coastal Pinot Noir tasting
WHERE: Home of Betty and David Gibson
WHEN: Saturday, May 12 6 P.M.
This is an important DOUBLE POUR tasting — so please bring guests, and make your reservations as early as you can.
This tasting will co-hosted by Ed Coyne and Laura Wilson. The purpose of this event (in addition to having a good tasting) is to identify one or two wines that might be added to the Cellar Society’s cellar for a future Repast. Your hosts started their search for candidates with approximately 70 wines from JJ Buckley and 45 from K&L, plus more. You will be tasting the “finalists” — highly rated California coastal Pinot Noirs from the 2012-2015 vintages. The warm-up wines will be slightly older and also with impressive records.
Cost will be approximately $30 for dinner and $45 for the tasting depending on the number in attendance.
On another note, the Gibsons have replaced the Cellar Society tables with light-weight folding tables suitable for 6-8 tasters. The new tables fold in the middle and will fit in the backseat of a car. They weigh 33 lbs each rather than 66 as the old ones did. These tables are available to borrow should you need them to host a tasting. The picture below gives the particulars:
