The June tasting at David and Diane’s Napa home, which is adjacent to the Stag’s Leap pinnacles. The tasting featured their neighbor – Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars (SLWC) – and their cabernets.
The tasting was dubbed as “vertical-horizontal” to reflect both sequential years from 2012 to present as well as cross-comparisons within vintages of the Fay and Stag’s Leap vineyards (SLV) along with the blend of the best: Cask23. For those unfamiliar with SLWC, they became renowned following the Judgment of Paris wine tasting of 1976, when the 1973 SLV won first place in a blind tasting against it’s Bordeaux competitors, including Mouton-Rothchild, Haut Brion, Leoville Las Cases, as well as other high end California cabs. A bottle of this wine sits in the Smithsonian, next to Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit, no less.
As a special treat, Justin Keim, a Wine Educator from SLWC, was present and discussed the history of SLWC, the Judgement of Paris, the remarkably different terroirs within the estate, and of the individual wines in the tasting.
Fume Restaurant did their usually great job of catering.
